New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Public Health shows that when a pregnant woman has a bad relationship with her husband or partner it is the strongest predictor of maternal emotional distress which can lead to pre-baby blues.

Norwegian Study

Fifty thousand pregnant women participated in the study. The researchers looked at how these women felt about their work, family or partner, and compared their bouts of illness, alcohol and smoking habits. The amount of support women received from their partners had the strongest link with mental health; those women who were most unhappy with their relationships were the most likely to be depressed. The women in the study who were happy in their relationship, work and life in general were less likely to develop pre-baby blues.

Conclusion

Women who were older and the women who were happy regardless of age were less stressed at home and work and had healthy happier babies.
