New York is Latest State to Legalize Gay Marriage
On June 24th the state of New York took a monumental leap into history by being the latest state to vote to legalize same sex marriage.
According to the New York Times, the State Senate voted 32 to 29 for the bill legalizing same sex marriage. New York Govenor Andrew M.Cumo signed the bill at 11:55 p.m. the night of June 24th and the law will go into effect in 30 days.
In one of the most revealing moments in the Senate session came when Senator Mark Grisanti, a Republican who ran on the platform against Gay Marriage had a change of heart and voted for the bill. The New York Times quotes Senator Grisanti as saying, "I apologize for those who feel offended. I cannot deny a person,a human being, a taxpayer,a worker, the people of my district and across this state, the State of New York, and those people who make it the great state that it is the same rights I have with my wife."
New York is the largest state to legalize same sex marriage and the 6th state plus the District of Columbia to do so.
